Development of a steady-state oral microbial biofilm community using the constant-depth film fermenter.

The complexity of biofilm communities like dental plaque suggests that laboratory model biofilm growth systems may help to understand their structure and function. This study describes the use of a constant-depth film fermenter (CDFF) to investigate biofilm formation by a nine-membered community of oral bacteria. The community was grown to steady state in a chemostat incubated anaerobically. Th...

Role of urease enzymes in stability of a 10-species oral biofilm consortium cultivated in a constant-depth film fermenter.

Using a 10-species oral biofilm consortium and defined mutants, we show that high-level capacity to generate ammonia from a common salivary substrate is needed to maintain community diversity. This model appears to be suitable for the study of the effects of individual genetic determinants on the ecology of oral biofilms.

Reproducible Biofilm Cultivation of Chemostat-Grown Escherichia coli and Investigation of Bacterial Adhesion on Biomaterials Using a Non-Constant-Depth Film Fermenter

Biomaterials-associated infections are primarily initiated by the adhesion of microorganisms on the biomaterial surfaces and subsequent biofilm formation. Understanding the fundamental microbial adhesion mechanisms and biofilm development is crucial for developing strategies to prevent such infections. Suitable in vitro systems for biofilm cultivation and bacterial adhesion at controllable, con...

Thin-film modelling of biofilm growth and quorum sensing

Biofilms are slimy films of bacteria that typically grow on solid surfaces with a fluid interface. Two mathematical models for nutrient dependent, early-stage biofilm growth and quorum sensing are proposed and studied. An aim of this work is to use thin-film methods to derive a dimensionally reduced model on a stronger theoretical basis to that of Ward et al. (J. Math. Biol., 47, 23-55, 2003). ...

Modelling Relations between Instrumental and Sensory Measurements in Factorial Experiments Modelling Relations between Instrumental and Sensory Measurements in Factorial Experiments

In connection to sensory evaluations of foods, chemical or physical measurements of the relevant sensory properties are often searched for. The data available for testing whether some such instrumental measurement is linearly related to a sensory variable usually stem from a factorial experiment rather than from some random sub-population. Thus, to calibrate the two variables properly and to te...
